4th September 2006
Directors for 2007
WGUK Season
Following a very
successful 2006 winter season, with a 1st place (Cadet Class), two 2nd
Places (Open and A Class), one 4th place (Junior Class) at the 2006
WinterGuard United Kingdom British Championships, 2007 sees a number
of exciting changes and we are pleased to announce the following
appointments:
Rugrats (Cadet Class Guard)
With two consecutive Cadet Class Championships under her belt,
Kristina Longford, will be continuing as Director of the
Rugrats. Krissie’s expertise in introducing the youngest
members of Southern Knights into the world of colour guard is
unparalleled. In the 2005 season 50% of the 10 members of the Rugrats
were brand new to the activity and likewise for the 2006 season 10 of
the 16 members had only joined SK during the preceding 6 months. In
2007 Krissie will be celebrating 15 years with SK after joining the
Cadet Corps at the age of 6. We are also pleased to advise that
Krissie has been appointed as the Guard Captain of the 2007 Open Class
Guard.
Junior Class Guard
After joining the staff of the Juniors for the 2005 season and
then working jointly with the Junior and A Class Guards in 2006, Mel
Delves has been appointed as the new Director of the Junior
Guard. Mel started her colour guard/marching band life in 1989 as
a member of Brighton Promenaders Marching Band. She then joined
Reflexions colour guard 3 years later and was a member with them until
1996.
A Class Guard
Having completed 3 years as Director of the Junior Guard, Emma
Brown (nee Mooney)
has now been appointed Director of the A Guard. Emma’s
"marching arts" career commenced in 1985 as a member of
Brighton Promenaders and she joined SK in 1996 starting in the brass
section before moving to the colour guard a couple of years later.
Emma was Guard Captain of the SK Open Class Guard for 6 years - ageing
out at the 2006 WGUK Championships.
Open Class Guard
Following the birth of his second child, Dave Parris, the Open
Class Guard Director for the past two years, has made the decision to
take more of a back seat role (more about that later!!) and therefore
we are pleased to advise that the Director of the Open Class
Guard will now be Gavin Woodhead. Gavin joined Southern
Knights at the tender age of 8 and was a member of the A Class
Championship winning Guard in 1998. Following this he has since
marched with Mayflower colour guard in the UK and Corona Colour Guard
and Cadets D&BC in the USA as well as teaching in the UK with
Black Knights Drum & Bugle Corps where he is currently the Guard
Caption Head. Whilst assisting in 2002, Gavin returned
"home" to SK as a full time staff member for the 2005 WGUK
Season and in 2006 continued on staff as well as a marching member.
Due to the movement of a number of last years A
Class Guard members into the Open Class Guard, an additional
appointment has also been made within the Open Class Guard with Tammy
Clegg (nee Longman)
moving from being A Guard Director last season to taking the role of Assistant
Director of the Open Class Guard. Tammy, who has been on
staff at SK for the past 4 years, has designed for and taught several
units within the Drum Corps and Marching Band activity in the UK. This
summer Tammy continued her role as Show Co-Ordinator with 6th Hove
Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps and she is currently a registered Judge
for the British Youth Band Association.
Consultant
As previously mentioned, due to family commitments, Dave
Parris stood down from being Open Guard Director following the
2006 WGUK Championships but we are extremely pleased that Dave will
still be very much involved in all 4 SK units (as he has been for the
past 6/7 years) in assisting the design teams with their new
productions for the 2007 WinterGuard season.
