31st March 1998 Knights Make History As Double Champions It's been a long time coming, but well worth waiting for. On Saturday 28th March 1998 the two Southern Knights Guards were crowned Junior Class and A Class Champions at the DCUK British Colour Guard Championships. This is the first time in the Championships history that two units from the same organisation have won their respective classes in the same year and, of course, it was the Knights that did it. The day did not start quite as smoothly as planned with the coach breaking down before even picking up the Guards, but this did seem to cause too many problems, for the members at least! Following the Open Class Preliminaries and the Cadet Class Championships, the six Junior Class Guards competed with our Cadets seeded 1st. Without doubt the most powerful display in the class the Guard performed to the stirring 1984 Olympic music of John Williams. Once again, as they have all season, the 16 members performed to their best and won the Class by nearly 3 points. Congratulations to Sharron Cole, Sue Lyall and all the members on an excellent season winning all but one of their contests. Once the Cadet and Junior Class Awards had been completed, the eleven A Class Guards commenced the largest section of the days contest. Seeded 2nd, the Main Guard had put the finishing touches to their portrayal of Romeo & Juliet with music from the film, which was released on 28th March 1997 (one year ago to the day!!). With extra scenery and a revised ending, the Guard performed like champions and were rewarded as such by winning the class by over 3 points. Congratulations to Nicola & Simon Spencer, Sarah Foord and the members on a well deserved win. Plans are already being formulated for the 1999 Winterguard Season - watch this space for details. The Knights may well make history again!!!
