15th February 1999 Worthing Winterguard Report All three Guards were back in action at the Southern Knights sponsored Winterguard Contest at Worthing on Sunday 14th February. Both the Junior and A Class Guards had put in a large amount of work and changes over the past 2 weeks and today was the day to see whether it had all been worth it. First on in the days competition were the Rugrats in the Cadet Class, which only had two entrants today. Now up to 11 members but still very inexperienced, the Guard were very well received and although beaten into 2nd place are beginning to show more confidence as the weeks go by.
The Cadet Guard, with 6 members today, had added new pieces of Flintstones music and tidied up a lot of their equipment work. 3rd Place again this week but they have closed the gap slightly on the leading pack and so all to play for in the Junior Class. The surprise of the day came for the A Class girls. With major changes taking place over the last couple of weeks including scrapping and replacing a whole section of the show the Guard 'leapfrogged' into 1st Place in their class. This result effectively places the Guard in 3rd Place in the A Class but it will not be until the British Championships on the 20th March that they will get the chance to compete against both of the Guards above them. There is now a whole month before our Guards get a chance to compete again and all 3 units will be continuing to work on the progress they have made so far. Next competition is on 14th March in Hornchurch, Essex and, of course, everyone else will be working as hard as us over the next few weeks and so anything may happen by then!! |
